My Vocation Story

Sister Genevieve Kureth, D.C.It is a privilege and a joy to share my vocation story with you.

I was born at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, MD on May 22, 1920 (a 1920 model!) I was second oldest of five children, with two brothers and two sisters.

St. Martin’s in Baltimore had an elementary and a high school, with 1200 children in the grade school, 250 in the high school. Thirty Daughters of Charity taught in the schools.

The Sisters sold prayer books, prior to our First Communion, with covers that had a pearl-like appearance. There were three choices, one with the Sacred Heart, one with Blessed Mother and one with Jesus Knocking on a Door. I chose the latter, whereuponSister Kureth with colleagues

Sister said, "I’m surprised that a little girl named Mary would not choose the one with Blessed Mother." Then she asked, "What does the door picture mean?” To which I replied, "It means Jesus is knocking at the door of my heart." Sister responded, "And don’t you forget it." Then she added, "Notice that the door has no knob—so only you can open it!"
