My Vocation Story

I believe my call to become a Daughter of Charity began when I was in elementary school. These Sisters were my teachers and even at a young age I observed their love, kindness and self-giving. Thus, I was happy to be around them and eager to assist them with sundry chores.

In high school I continued to be taught by the Daughters and noticed the same characteristics. The thought of becoming one of them was realized when I believed God was calling me to give myself to Him and his people.

The one obstacle I confronted was not being able to go home and visit my family. I struggled with this obstacle until I was in the Seminary about a month. My family was coming to visit me in December. I thought that if my mother suggested I come home, I thought I would go. As it turned out, my mother, who was a woman of deep faith and wisdom, sensed that I was homesick. She said, "Mary, I came from Ireland and never saw my Mother and family again." I got such grace and strength from her statement that homesickness ceased to be a problem!

My ministries extended to six states and in spite of challenges from time to time, I was happy wherever I was missioned. I have lived as a Daughter of Charity for sixty-three years. God is my dearest Friend and I know He is walking with me and still supporting me. I know, too, He has compensated for the sacrifices I may think I have made!
